Celestion Blue

This classic guitar speaker actually started life as a radio speaker that was modified specifically for use in electric guitar amplifiers. In its original G12 guitar speaker incarnation it appeared in several colour variations, but it was the Blue version, known as T.530 and fitted as standard into Vox AC30 amps that secured its place in guitar tone history.

The Blue found favour with notable guitarists like Brian May due to its glorious dampened attack warm lows mellow upper-mids and brilliant bell-like top-end. When coupled with a suitable amplifier it evokes rich definition and develops beautiful musical compression when pushed. According to tone enthusiasts worldwide the Blue is the benchmark for guitar speaker perfection.

Celestion’s Legendary Heritage Series Returns with New G12M (55) “Blackback” at Winter NAMM 2026

Anaheim, CA (January 21, 2026)  — At this year’s Winter NAMM 2026, Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers, is proud to announce the return of the celebrated Heritage Series guitar speaker line including the G12H (55), G12H (75), and G12-65, alongside the debut of the “Blackback” edition of the long-sought-after G12M (55). The Heritage Series, back by popular demand, brings several of the company’s most beloved classic drivers, coveted by collectors and tone purists, to recapture the sonic qualities of the era.

The Celestion Heritage process identifies the most desirable version of a driver from a specific point in time and sets about a painstaking process of regressing the speaker’s development to its inception. Using original blueprints and material specifications, Celestion sound engineers have ensured magnet assemblies and coil formers are produced exactly as they once were. In addition, they have reformulated adhesives and edge treatments that are no longer commercially available. Finally, authentic labels have been used to bring these exquisite old speakers back to life.

One of the stars of this year’s NAMM exhibit is the G12M (55) “Blackback” (originally released as the T1511). While Celestion’s earliest popular ceramic speakers featured green plastic cans, the company transitioned to a black can in the early 1970s—a change that has taken on great significance for tone enthusiasts. This G12M version with a 55Hz bass cone has been inextricably linked to players like Paul Kossoff of Free, whose famously sweet sustain defined an era. Rated at 25 watts with a sensitivity of 96dB, the G12M (55) delivers the punch, sparkle, and singing midrange that many consider the very essence of Celestion tone.

Joining the G12M (55) are the returning Heritage Series G12H (55) and G12H (75). These faithful re-creations capture the unmistakable mojo of late 60s rock guitar tones, both famously powering the rigs of legends like Jimi Hendrix. The G12H (55) features a 55c/s bass cone known for thick, syrupy tones and a deep, growling back end—a definitive choice for towering 4×12 stacks. The G12H (75) employs a 75c/s lead  cone, providing a tighter bottom end and punchy upper-midrange for those seeking different tonal balance. Both G12H models feature a 30-watt power rating and 100dB sensitivity.

Also now found under the Heritage Series umbrella is the currently available G12-65. A firm favourite of hard rock players in the early 80s, this 65-watt driver features a precisely tuned midrange and crisp, defined top-end that delivers an aggressive crunch capable of punching through any mix.

“Celestion fans have been asking us to re-introduce the drivers found in the new Heritage Series for years, and no stone was left unturned in pursuit of their original sound,” said Paul Cork, Celestion’s Head of Engineering. “We poured through our large archive of drawings, blueprints, and parts-lists; we called upon the expertise of Celestion engineers past and present, and spent hundreds of hours in our listening room, critically auditioning the original speakers against the Heritage models in development, before we were comfortable in proceeding with production.”

More information on the Heritage Series is available on the Celestion website.

Celestion Debuts the G12-100 Raven Guitar Speaker at Winter NAMM 2026

Anaheim, CA (January 21, 2026) — At this year’s Winter NAMM 2026, Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers, is thrilled to unveil the new G12-100 Raven guitar speaker. Engineered specifically for the modern metal player, the Raven is the harbinger of Celestion’s most aggressive sound yet, combining the brand’s legendary tonal integrity with a groundbreaking lightweight design.

The Raven is defined by its ability to deliver the heaviest of modern metal tones,  while remaining light as a feather. At the heart of this innovation is a reimagined ceramic magnet assembly. This new-design motor structure massively lowers the speaker’s overall weight—to just 2.5 kg (5.5 lb)—without compromising the huge magnetic forces required to power such a gargantuan tone machine.

Built for devastating power, the 12-inch diameter Raven features a formidable 100W power rating, a 2-inch voice coil and offers 100dB of sensitivity. This combination allows it to handle the most extreme high-gain lead lines and seismic low-end riff-work with ease. Its tonal signature offers a detailed mid-range punch, brooding highs, and a firm, authoritative low end. The treble is meticulously voiced to be articulate without ever becoming brittle or harsh.

“The G12-100 Raven is more than just a speaker; it’s a tool for players to dominate the stage,” says Celestion Head of Marketing Ken Weller. “By reimagining the ceramic magnet structure, we have created a driver that delivers the massive heft metal players demand without weighing down their cabinets. It’s an innovation that provides consistently high performance from the first note to the last.”

More information on the G12-100 Raven is available on the Celestion website.

Celestion Celebrates their 100th Anniversary with the Debut of the Celestion 100, a Special G12 Alnico Guitar Speaker, at NAMM 2024

Anaheim, CA (January 24, 2024) — At the 2024 NAMM Show, Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers and pro audio drivers for sound reinforcement applications, kicks off the celebration of their 100th anniversary with the introduction of an artisanal, 12-inch speaker, the Celestion100. Paying tribute to Les Ward — Celestion’s chief engineer until 1979 — the Celestion 100 channels the legacy and tone of the Celestion’s G12 speakers from the late 1950s and early 1960s including the Alnico Blue, the first speaker ever purpose-built for the electric guitar.

By the late 1950s, it was clear that the popularity of rock and roll music was an unstoppable juggernaut. Since its central instrument was the electric guitar, and guitar players were crying out for more powerful amplifiers, Mr. Ward sought a design that could withstand the increased heat and vibration the guitar imposed upon a speaker in those newer, beefier amps. A strengthened version of the original G12, which began life as a general-purpose speaker meant for radios, was the fruit of his efforts. Further refinement produced the T530, also called the “Alnico Blue” because of its blue basket frame.

The Alnico Blue worked so well that it was installed in Vox AC15 and AC30 amplifiers (a favorite of The Beatles) which powered the British Beat invasion of the early 1960s. Its close sibling, the silver-framed T652 was adopted by Marshall, the amplifier brand most universally associated with heavy metal and British rock, soon afterwards becoming the original Celestion driver for legendary Marshall amps such as the 1962, aka the “Bluesbreaker.”

The G12 has long been the gift that keeps on giving; Celestion’s current product family includes many variations with frequency responses and power handling capacities tailored to different musical applications and genres. The new Celestion 100 sits at the head of this table, inspired by the unique tones of those early alnico speakers, not just the T530 and T652, and some of the earlier models too, including the much rarer B024 and CT3757. To achieve this, Celestion has formulated an all-new cone, benchmarking it against perfectly preserved vintage cones as development progressed. Edge treatment is thin and light, carefully measured to enhance the cone’s resiliency during excursion, while bringing out the best of the cone’s performance.

In the new Celestion 100, the voice coil is likewise based on Les Ward’s original T530 design but has been carefully re-created with more heat-resistant materials to match the vintage tonality, while offering a power rating of 30 watts, and peak sound pressure level of 100dB. The cone’s dust dome, bolt-on magnet assembly and rear-label have been painstakingly designed to ensure a period-correct appearance.

Players and listeners can expect a blooming low end and bell-like treble coupled with a sweet, shimmering midrange presence. When driven into distortion, the Celestion 100 compresses gradually and musically, softening the notes’ attack in the tradition of great Celestion alnico speakers. It all adds up to tone and aesthetics that are as credibly vintage as any speaker can achieve, but with performance that is perfectly at home in a modern live performance or music production context.

Each Celestion 100 speaker is individually tested and inspected. An identity label puts the finishing touch on the ownership experience, providing a unique serial number as well as a traditional Celestion T-number: T100 for 8-ohm versions of the speaker and T101 for 16 ohms. Musicians who acquire the Celestion 100 anniversary guitar speaker will have the pleasure of owning a true retro-styled, vintage classic based on the first loudspeakers created specifically for the electric guitar.

See and hear the Celestion 100 at booth 6302 in the main hall of the Anaheim Convention Center, January 25-28, 2024, in Anaheim, California.

G12M-50 Hempback: True American Flavoured Tone

Part science, part dark art: cone design is perhaps the most artisan element of a guitar speaker’s manufacturing process. It relies on the formulation of a cellulose mixture (paper pulp) that’s in balance both chemically and tonally.

The paper mixture requires various additives, the correct beating process and the appropriate shape forming method; all of which contribute to the cone’s characteristics affecting weight, stiffness and compliance. Only an experienced hand (and ear) can be trusted to select the appropriate ingredients and methodology when formulating a new cone to achieve a desired tone.

Experience has found that adding hemp fibres to a guitar speaker cone, mixed in just the right quantity, enables the creation of a truly unique and different sound.

The G12M-50 Hempback is Celestion’s first ever hemp cone guitar speaker, representing a new development in the company’s never-ending pursuit of outstanding tone.  In developing it, Celestion has combined a hemp cone selected for its sweet and smooth musical character and combined it with a medium weight (35 oz) ceramic magnet chosen for optimum tonal balance. The result is both surprisingly different and at the same time ‘reassuringly Celestion’, delivering a balanced low end, plenty of mid-band character together with smooth, silky highs and is sure to take your tone in an exciting new direction!

The speaker is particularly suited for use in American voiced amps, for example combos such as a Fender® Deluxe Reverb® or Blues Jr.®, delivering true American-flavoured tone along with cleans that are second to none. Load up a Hempback for a smooth and “smoky” sound that’s musical and responsive, and let the hemp tone shine through.

My G12Ms have got black covers, how are they different to the Greenback?

Although the standard colour for G12M rear covers was green (‘field green’ it was called originally), G12M and G12H speakers were also made with black, as well as grey, beige and cream rear covers at various times. This was probably due to a shortage of the correct colour plastic to make them from (e.g. late delivery of the raw material). The different colour covers were only a cosmetic change not affecting the acoustic performance of the speakers in any way. Black, grey, cream, beige or green, they’re all ‘Greenbacks’.

Celestion Debuts the G12 EVH Impulse Responses – Now You Can Digitally Download the Eddie Van Halen Signature Speaker Tone

Ipswich, UK (January 30, 2019) — Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers with a celebrated history in creating the world’s renowned classic guitar tones, is pleased to introduce the new G12 EVH Impulse Response, as the latest addition to their acclaimed line of IRs, the definitive digital representations of the company’s classic guitar speaker tones. The G12 EVH was created for, and bears the initials of, one of the most influential rock guitarists of the last forty years – Eddie Van Halen. The new G12 EVH IRs, as well as the rest of the comprehensive family of Celestion IRs, are available for audition and download at CelestionPlus.

Eddie Van Halen has been an avid user of Celestion Greenbacks from the outset of his career. So, when it came time to select speakers for his 5150-III signature 4×12, Van Halen chose the 20-watt Heritage Series G12M as the most faithful and familiar reproduction of his Greenback tone. And with the inclusion of a custom black rear can with the red, white and black stripes, the Celestion G12EVH guitar speaker was born.

Celestion’s EVH speakers are a key element of the renowned ‘brown sound’ associated with Van Halen’s early albums. The speaker is characterised by warm lows, a lush midrange and an expressive and refined treble. Drive hard for searing lead lines and an immensely satisfying rhythm and grind.

Countless guitarists have sought to reproduce the distinctive Van Halen sound over the years, and now their quest just got a whole lot easier, with the Celestion G12 EVH impulse responses, representing an authentic digital version of this classic speaker.

As with all Celestion IRs, five individual IR varieties of the new G12 EVH are available for download, which correspond to each of 5 separate types of cabinet, including: 1×12 (open back), 1×12 (closed back), 2×12 (open back), 2×12 (closed back) and 4×12 (closed back.) These can be purchased either separately, as an entire collection for a savings of over 50%, or as part of a Pick & Mix option. Celestion’s Pick & Mix option features IR combinations of either 3 or 5 cabinets from the company’s full range of IRs, offering customers flexibility and value pricing in building their personal IR library.

“Celestion are pleased to add the Eddie Van Halen signature speaker to our ever-growing family of versatile Impulse Responses,” says Nigel Wood, Celestion CEO. “Now customers can get closer to the legendary Van Halen sound at home or in the studio with the new Celestion G12 EVH IR, an authentic digital version of this signature speaker.”
