Celestion Introduces the G10 Creamback Guitar Speaker Impulse Responses

Ipswich, UK (March 19, 2020) —Celestion, the world’s premier designer and manufacturer of guitar loudspeakers and well-known as the voice of rock and roll behind many of the world’s most memorable guitar performances,  is pleased to announce the addition of the G10 Creamback Impulse Responses to its impressive collection of Celestion Impulse Responses available for audition and download at CelestionPlus.

The G10 Creamback guitar speaker delivers rich classic Celestion Creamback tone in a smaller 10” format. With a ceramic magnet, a 1.75-inch voice coil, and 45-watts of power handling, the G10 Creamback is built using the same production methods and materials developed for the 12” Creambacks; and just like its bigger brothers, the G10 Creamback is hand-built in the UK. Punchy and dynamic, exactly as you’d expect from a 10; its tone is warm, expressive, detailed and well-balanced. Now the G10 Creamback guitar speaker has been captured as an IR, an accurate digital representation which provides all the warmth and detail that guitar players love about the physical 10” Creamback.

The G10 Creamback speaker impulse response collection includes five different cabinet configurations:

1×10 (open back)

1×10 (closed back)

2×10 (open back)

2×10 (closed back)

4×10 (closed back)

Each one of the cabinet configurations was recorded with painstaking accuracy by our expert sound engineers, in a world-class studio, using three pro-grade studio microphones – the Sennheiser MD421, Royer R-121 ribbon mic and Shure SM57 – each in six different positions (plus a rear mic for the open back cabs). All the positions are referred to in the IR files as Balanced, Bright, Fat, Thin, Dark and Dark 2.  A Neumann TLM107 room mic was also used to provide additional mic mixes, giving users an impressive range of tonal options.

As with all genuine Celestion IRs, the new G10 Creamback impulse responses are downloaded in .WAV format for compatibility with most DAWs, IR plug-ins and amp modelling software.

The new G10 Creamback IRs join the extensive collection of genuine Celestion Impulse Responses, with guitar IRs such as the A-TypeCelestion BlueCelestion Cream, Celestion Gold, Classic Lead 80, Heritage G12H 55Hz, Heritage G12M, G12 EVH, G12K-100, G12-35XC, G12T-75,  G12-50GL LynchbackG12-H150 Redback, G12M Greenback, G12M-65 Creamback, G12M-75 Creamback, G12H Anniversary, G12-65, Neo Creamback, V-TypeVintage 30  and bass impulse responses such as the BL10-100X, BN15-400X, BN10-200X, BN15-300X, PULSE10, PULSE12 and PULSE15.

About Celestion Impulse Responses

Celestion IRs, which capture the essential behavior of the cabinet in the specific space in which it was recorded, including the frequency and phase response of single drivers as well as the interaction of multiple speakers, offer the user significant benefits. In both recording and live production, Celestion IRs enable the desired tone to be precisely and consistently reproduced regardless of the music recording or live sound environment. And IR users can escape the limitations of a single mic and cabinet setup and explore a universe of possibilities to create the perfect tone. Once you find a tone that you love, it can be precisely recreated, in the studio or on the road, time after time. And the IRs allow Celestion customers to audition specific models before purchasing one or more physical speakers.

Celestion IR digital downloads are available in uncompressed, industry standard .WAV format at 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz sample rates at 24 bit depth, in lengths of 200 and 500 milliseconds Once the files are downloaded and unzipped, users simply load the IRs into a convolution plug-in in their DAW or into other processing hardware. These formats will work in all known hardware capable of loading IRs, and for the most popular hardware Celestion have already grouped together the correct formats. Guitar processor manufacturers supported include (but are not limited to) Atomic Amps, Fractal Audio Systems, Kemper, Line 6, Logidy, Positive Grid, Two Notes, Headrush and Yamaha. The Celestion IR files may be downloaded in the sample rate and length appropriate for the hardware being used or as a complete package of all rates and lengths. Certain third party hardware requires the files to be converted into a proprietary format before use. Celestion Plus.

Celestion Boosts their Line of Bass Impulse Responses with the New BL10-100X and BN15-400X IRs

Ipswich, UK (February 18, 2020) — Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers whose classic guitar tones have made the company world-renowned, is pleased to add  two new bass speaker impulse responses, the BN15-400X and BL10-100X, to their collection of Bass Impulse Responses. The new Bass IRs, along with the complete collection of other authentic Celestion bass and guitar speaker tones, is available for audition and download at CelestionPlus.

The Celestion BN15-400X has often been a go-to bass speaker for those looking for a thunderous low-end performance. For those looking for a warm bass tone that never sacrifices punch, this speaker is purpose-built to command the bottom line with a driving, rhythmic thump.

The Celestion BL10-100X is built for bass without compromise – this 10” 100-Watt bass guitar speaker delivers heavy-duty presence with drive, clarity and full-bodied tone. Designed for an extended, balanced low-end, punchy mid-range and just enough treble “zing”, the Celestion BL10-100X is characterised by huge amounts of linear excursion ideal for high-powered rock performances.

Now the Celestion BN15-400X and BL10-100X bass speakers have been faithfully captured as bass speaker impulse responses. Both the Celestion BN15-400X and BL10-100X bass speaker impulse responses are available for download in 2×10 (Ported) and 4×10 (Closed Back) cabinet configurations – or as a Bass Bundle with added Playing Style mixes.

Celestion’s complete range of impulse responses includes a number of options for bass players, featuring many of the company’s best-selling bass guitar speakers. And Celestion’s meticulous impulse response capture process has been used for the company’s bass IRs.

In particular, this meant selecting the most appropriate microphones for recording bass guitar.

Each speaker has been recorded in the most popular cabinet combinations for that speaker type, with three different microphones – a Sennheiser MD421, Neumann U47 FET and AKG D112 – each in six different positions for additional tonal variety, creating an extensive IR library for each speaker. Also included is a room mic recording using a Neumann TLM 107 (the same room mic used for our regular IRs.)

A new addition to the bass impulse responses is an extra high frequency recording (using a Neumann KM84), which can be used on its own or mixed with one of the other microphones to add an extra bit of ‘zing’ to the top-end.

And the Bass Impulse Responses feature a selection of extra mic mixes for you to experiment with, including: D112+KM84, U47+KM84, MD421+KM84, D112+MD421+KM84, U47+MD421+KM84, U47+D112+KM84, All mics, All mics+Room Stereo and All mics+Room Mono.

New “Playing Style” packs are also available separate add on options, which have optimised the IRs for a range of different playing methods: Finger basic, Finger warmth detail, Plectrum (Pick) basic, Plectrum (Pick) aggressive and Slap.

As with all genuine Celestion IRs, each of the new bass speaker impulse responses are downloaded in .WAV format for compatibility with most DAWs, IR plug-ins and amp modelling software.

The new  BL10-100X and BN15-400X Impulse Responses join the growing collection of other Bass IRs including the BN10-200X ; BN15-300X, PULSE10, PULSE12 and PULSE15, as well as all the other genuine Celestion acclaimed guitar speaker Impulse Responses such as the:  A-TypeCelestion BlueCelestion Cream, Celestion Gold, Classic Lead 80, Heritage G12H 55Hz, Heritage G12M, G12 EVH, G12K-100, G12-35XC, G12T-75,  G12-50GL Lynchback,   G12-H150 Redback, G12M Greenback, G12M-65 Creamback, G12M-75 Creamback, G12H Anniversary, G12-65, Neo Creamback, V-TypeVintage 30 and many other models.

Celestion Debuts the Midnight 60 Guitar Speaker at Winter NAMM 2020

Anaheim, CA (January 16, 2020) —Celestion, the premier manufacturer of guitar and bass loudspeakers whose classic guitar tones have made the company famous as the voice of rock and roll, is very pleased to debut the new Midnight 60 loudspeaker at Winter NAMM 2020 (Booths 7602 and ACC North 18500).

An unsung hero that’s been loaded into some very popular branded combos for the last couple of years, the Midnight 60 will soon be available to buy from Celestion vendors the world over, as a super-affordable upgrade option.

The Midnight 60 continues Celestion’s tradition of delivering rich, classic British tone in innovative new ways, featuring the moving parts that were derived from the V-Type design, but with a different magnet assembly which has the effect of shifting the tonal balance to give a sonic character more reminiscent of a Celestion’s vintage G12L speaker.

Whatever the playing style, Midnight 60 provides an exhilarating sound in the classic Celestion style. Cleans are well-balanced with just enough top end to make the high frequencies sparkle. Overdriven this speaker brings searing rock tones, with plenty of low-end warmth and mid-band character.

The world’s first Full Range Live Response speaker

The F12-X200 is the world’s first Full Range LIVE Response guitar speaker.

For guitar players who use modelling and profiling amps, a full range flat response loudspeaker is viewed as highly desirable for delivering the output of your emulated set-up in all its glory. While this can provide an impressive amount of detail and fidelity, it can also lack the physicality and the tactile and auditory feedback you get from playing through a bona-fide guitar speaker. It feels different, colder, more sterile perhaps.

The current breed of FRFR speakers are pro audio drivers, constructed to provide as neutral and linear output as possible. Very different from a guitar speaker which is purpose-designed to break-up into harmonic resonances—to produce musical sounding distortion—done by using thinner cones together with other sympathetic materials.

The F12-X200 Full Range Live Response speaker brings both of these characteristics together in one  loudspeaker. It truly is a full range driver: delivering a frequency response from 60Hz all the way up to 20kHz. The higher frequency part of the signal is reproduced using a Celestion compression driver which has been integrated using a high quality crossover circuit. This enables the X200 to reproduce the full spectrum of audible frequencies, for the most accurate output possible, whatever environment and set-up you might be emulating.

The X200’s response is remarkably neutral, with Celestion technology built into ensure there are no unwanted colourations that can overpower the input signal. However it has been built with the lighter moving mass and straighter sided cone of the type commonly used with guitar speakers and this really does gives the X200 much more of the feel of a traditional guitar speaker. The whole response of the speaker is LIVE, delivering all the physical response and tactile feedback you’d to expect from playing a traditional guitarist’s set-up. It doesn’t just sound like you’re playing a guitar, through a guitar speaker. It feels like it too.

Use the X200 anywhere you are using a modelling amp with Impulse Responses: in a backline cab or a monitor wedge on stage at home or in the studio.

How old is my Celestion speaker?/When was my Celestion made?

Most Celestion chassis drivers have been marked with a date code (two numbers and two letters), denoting the exact date of manufacture. These codes are added on the production line and are found in different locations depending on the age (or type) of speaker.

Date codes are expressed in the form of two digits (representing the day of the month 01 to 31) and two letters, one being the month, the other being the year. What you need to do is
1. track down the code,
2. refer to the date code table that provides an accurate record of the codes used throughout the years.

Upgrade

Think out of the box – suggestions for upgrading your guitar speaker

It’s well known that upgrading your guitar speaker can revolutionise your sound – but with such a wealth of speaker options to choose from, it’s difficult to know just which one is right for you.

This page isn’t meant to be a hard and fast set of rules, or a complete set of possible combinations; it doesn’t cover every playing style, guitar, amp or cabinet type. It’s simply a few ideas based on our experience and opinion; to give you a little inspiration in your quest for perfect tone.

If your favourite speaker type or combination isn’t shown here, it doesn’t mean we don’t agree, we probably just haven’t tried it yet! And if you have a few suggestions of your own, why not tell us, or better still show us on the Celestion Facebook page.

NOTE: When loading new speakers, always make sure that their total combined power handling capability is equal to or greater than the power output of the amplifier. Click here for more information on power handling.

My First Celestion

Congratulations on taking your first step towards tonal nirvana! Sometimes choosing a new guitar speaker to upgrade your tone can be confusing and even daunting, but it needn’t be…Here are a few suggestions for your first step into the world of Celestion. Try these options to begin with, if they’re not your style, there are plenty more to choose from:

Eight 15 to pump up your bedroom blaster

Ten 30 to supersize the sound of your backstage practice amp

Seventy 80 to beef up your first 4×12

Vintage Tone

In the 1960s, as players demanded greater amplification for increasingly louder and more raucous performances, amp builders turned to Celestion to provide reliable speakers that could handle the extra punishment and provide a sound that suited the new musical styles of the time. Then, we were simply making the best speakers we possibly could. Listening back now, we recognise that the sounds these speakers created were special. That’s why we call it Vintage Tone.

Celestion Blue: The original guitar speaker – warm, mellow, with a bell like chime

G12M Greenback: The fabled “brown sound” made famous first by Hendrix and again by Van Halen

Celestion Ruby “New Old Tone” a brand new cone which kinda sounds like 1965…

4 x 12

4×12 cabinets were originally invented in the 1960s, wired up to a high power head amplifier so the guitar could be heard over a thousand screaming fans (this was before the advent of decent PA). These days, the 4×12 is synonymous with raw rock and metal power. Here are a few suggestions for loading yours:

G12M Greenback: Gets you a Whole Lotta Angus

Vintage 30: Rocks like Slash and is in yer face like a Five Finger Death Punch

Heritage G12-65: When you want to dial in a 1980s Thrash attack

G12T-75: Goes with a Marshall 1960 cab, like mustard with hot dogs

G12H-75 Creamback: For a massive sound with exceptional lead guitar performance

G12K-100: Downtune like the Deftones’ Stephen Carpenter.

Boutique

An amplifier that is built from the highest specification parts, and designed and hand-crafted for the most discerning players demands a loudspeaker capable of expressing the soundscape that the builder intended. More than that, it has to help bring to life the tone that you are seeking. All manner of tonal possibilities are available from Celestion, here is a selection:

Heritage Series G12-65: For Robben Ford-style blues tones

Max Headroom

Although many of Celestion’s guitar speaker range are well known for their complex, musical break-up and distortion characteristics, sometimes you want to hold back on the growl until it’s really needed. For players who need tons of clean tone, or just want to play fast and loud and still hear every single detail:

G12K-100: Big fat magnet for big clean spank

Classic Lead 80: Powerful and controlled top end, detailed single note articulation

G12H-150 Redback: Delivering balance responsiveness and superb playability: extreme power handling without compromising tone

Seventy 80: THE modelling amp supremo

G12H-75 Creamback: 75-watts of power handling with an unmistakable G12H tone: tight lows and a punchy dynamic high end.

More Power

The evolution of amplification has long been a quest for more power. However, connect up a vintage speaker built in the early 60s with a modern amp designed to push out a lot of power, and damage is never more than a power chord away. The following speakers were built with high power amplifiers in mind, while continuing to channel the legendary Celestion sound.

G12M-65 Creamback(65-watt): High power version of the G12M. Push them hard and you’ll still get the same sweet vintage sounds

G12H-75 Creamback (75-watt): The H magnet brings additional focus, body and girth to the Creamback tone.

Vintage 30 (60-watt): The original hot-rodded Celestion delivers a unique and complex sound

Celestion Cream (90-watt): Delivering a higher power rating while preserving the very essence of an alnico guitar speaker.

Mixing It Up

A very modern approach is combining speakers with different characteristics to get your own special tonal cocktail. Here at Celestion we wholeheartedly approve of this experimental behaviour and humbly suggest a few combinations of our own.

G12H Anniversary / Celestion Blue

Celestion Gold / Vintage 30

G12M Greenback / Vintage 30

Vintage 30 / G12T-75

G12M-65 Creamback / G12H-75 Creamback

V-Type / A-Type

Remember:

  1. Match impedances (ohms): All speakers in the same box should have the same impedance.
  2. Power handling: As a rule of thumb, in a 2×12 cab, max power is 2x lowest rated speaker and in a 4×12, it’s 4x lowest rated speaker.
  3. Sensitivity matching: for best performance, speakers should have by less than 3dB difference in sensitivity.

Alnico

Back in the late 50s, Celestion modified a well established radio speaker (the G12) to produce the first purpose-built guitar speaker. It used an Alnico magnet and produced a tone that was characterised by a dampened attack, bell like chime and a tendency to compress when driven hard. In its trademark Blue livery, this speaker became part of the sound of the Beatles, and became a firm favourite with legends throughout the years. Hear it on recordings by Queen, U2 and The Foo Fighters.

Celestion Blue: The original guitar speaker: warm, mellow, with a bell like chime

Celestion Gold: Higher power handling, with a more rounded bass and softer highs

G10 Gold: Mellow Alnico character, blended with the speed and response of a 10″

Celestion Cream: Brings Alnico class to all kinds of amps from 1-watt to 90-watts.

Celestion Ruby: A richly musical warmth, with mellow highs and a smooth vintage midrange

The Power of Ten

Good sounding 10″ speakers can deliver a fast, punchy sound at wider listening angles and with reduced ‘boom’ on small stages. They can offer increased portability, reduced cost and the ability to push your amp into overdrive at reasonable levels without having drumsticks aimed at the back of your head.

G10 Gold: Everything you need from an alnico speaker in a 10″ package, Lush chime, creamy mid-range and a rich low-end

G10 Greenback: Made for dirty rock, rhythm and blues! Adds a raunchy full-bodied tone rich in low-end thump

VT Junior: Well balanced and versatile modern British tone, with sweet and clear upper mids and an articulate top-end

Ten 30: Rich and expressive, the Ten 30 combines warm lows with a vocal mid-range and an articulate top end. The clean sound is open and revealing; push hard and you’re rewarded with full-blooded Celestion grind.

BUILD THIS! Ported sub-bass cab featuring CF18VJD LF Driver

Celestion have designed a ported bass cabinet, specifically for use with the CF18VJD ferrite magnet, cast aluminium LF driver. Cabinet specifications are:

Material:
 18mm birch plywood
Cabinet Volume: 167 litres (5.9 cu. ft.) total / 135 litres (4.8 cu. ft.) effective
Cabinet Resonance (Fb): 37Hz
Max SPL (1-watt/1m): 127dB (-0.5dB at 40Hz, -3dB at 36.5Hz)
Recommended high pass filter: Butterworth 24 dB/octave, 33Hz cut-off

For detailed dimensions and a cut-out guide, see the attached PDF document below.

Bass Reflex

A ported or reflex cabinet is a simple box enclosure with one or more holes (ports) added on the front baffle. For most PA uses, this offers the best option for building a clean sounding loudspeaker cabinet that makes the most of the bass driver used. The addition of the port can extend bass driver performance and will also marginally improve the speaker’s low frequency power handling and efficiency.

The energy from the front of the driver is radiated to the outside world. But the sound from the back of the speaker also has an effect, as it vibrates the air in the port(s). This has a resonant frequency, like an organ pipe, adding to the sound output of the system. If the port(s) are designed correctly, the additional energy will extend bass performance without adding distortion or sacrificing a smooth response.

High Pass Filter

As with all ported boxes, it would be sensible to use with a high pass filter. This will ensure that no high level input is presented to the box below its lower limit. This is because, for very low frequency signals, the driver becomes unloaded, (i.e. the box effectively disappears.) Under these circumstances, driver excursion increases rapidly and the potential for driver damage is significant. For this CF18VJD cabinet, a suitable value for this filter is 33 Hz. A sharp corner to the cut-off would be desirable, so a 24 dB/octave Butterworth filter or similar is recommended.

Cabinet Build

The cabinet should be built as a solid and non-resonant box with well sealed and secured joints. This particular design uses 18mm plywood: the advantages of this are strength, durability and availability. The panel joints shown are simple butt joints that are screwed and glued. For those with advanced woodworking skills, more sophisticated joints can be used. Whatever joint type you use, it is important they are secure and airtight.

In addition, to reduce panel resonances, bracing battens have been added.

Connectors and Accessories

Electrical connectors such as high quality 1/4-inch jacks, 4mm binding posts, XLRs or a speakon can be used. When fitting these, mount the socket then make airtight using a sealing compound. Use mounting bolts and T-nuts to fix the driver to the baffle. CF18VJD is compatible with M6 bolts.

There is a wide range of speaker cabinet accessories available, including wheels, hands, grilles and corners, adding to convenience and durability. These should be fitted carefully so as not to weaken the box or cause leaks.
